The Best Time to Visit the Outer Banks: A Season-by-Season Guide
A season-by-season guide to the Outer Banks: what to expect in Nags Head in summer, fall, winter and spring.
There is no wrong time to visit the Outer Banks, but every season feels different. Here is what to expect in Nags Head throughout the year, and how to make the most of each one.
Summer: peak beach season
June through August is classic OBX: warm ocean water, long beach days and every shop and restaurant open. It is also the busiest time of year, so book rentals and reservations early. Village Beach Club members enjoy the pool, private beach access and Gather all season, May 1 through September 30.
Fall: the locals’ favorite
September and October bring warm water, fewer crowds and lower rental rates. It is a favorite time for weddings, fishing and festivals.
Winter: quiet and peaceful
From November through February the Outer Banks slows down. It is the perfect time for long beach walks, cozy rentals, Thanksgiving with the family and a holiday party by the ocean.
Spring: the season starts
March through May brings warming days and the start of the season. Village Beach Club opens May 1, 2027, and the next day hosts The Last Swell festival on Sunday, May 2.
